Clara Barton Camp (best place on earth)

So, the round about way that this blog came into existence involves CBC and a search for alumni campers and staff. I somehow came upon Kassie's blog during my search and was motivated to start my own blog.

Now, a slight side note, it was a delight to find Kassie's blog because she was one of the best parts of my Barton expereince which spanned 11 years starting in 1989. Kassie was the best camp director (although they were all wonderful) and made camp a home from day 1. In one of Kassie's posts, you'll notice that she mentions learning every camper's name. Whe she got to the Pixie's table (which was the youngest kids at that time, I was 6) I was too shy to tell her my real name, so she named me Fred. It stuck. To this day many camp people remember me as Fred, some don't know my real name. I then started to call Kassie by her middle name, Agnes, and the rest is history. That was a really long side note, but I like to sing the praises of wonderful people!

Any way...I would love to talk to people from CBC, current or alumni alike. I would really like to talk to anyone who went to camp with me or during the late 90's who remembers the Pixie's, Squirrels Nest, Shangrila, etc... I have really had a strong urge to reconnect with camp after 6 years away. Please drop me note if you think we knew each other or want to swap camp stories, songs, etc...

It's the most wonderful place in the world.

I remember that song that Donna and ... (Oh god, I forget the other woman's name!) wrote. I have it on tape somewhere in all these boxes.

CBC is the best place ever. I took Chris there last summer to show him part of what makes living with this disease easier. And walking around that place ... the goosebumps all came back.

That and the cabins are all rockin' and new. :)

Kerri,
I still remember all of the words to that song. I can't remember who wrote the song with Donna either, but I do remember performing it at closing campfires 3 times after it debuted. I think the new cabins are amazing, but I miss the old, rotting, musty ones with shared histories recorded all over the walls...

Smiles to you...

And did you know that the line, "You once said to me... it's the most wonderful place in the world..." came from when I interviewed Donna for a camp job?

your blog is very pretty.

like you i have a weird thing about seeing numbers and thinking it's a blood sugar or do some kinda weird math. in englad we measure in mmol so there are like adverts on tv for loans at 5.9% apr and i think yay that looks like a blood sugar reading.

omg, i think i must be CRAZY...

Hi Nicole -

Another CBC Nicole checking in!

I miss those old cabins too. So much. But the new cabins will get old too, and for the campers who never knew the old cabins, those new cabins will be "their cabins," the ones they used to stay in - the old cabins. But the place will still be the most special place ever designed, won't it? That doesn't change. Ever.

Anyway, I'll look forward to reading more of your blog!

Nicole (Nicci Purcell - CBC 1983-4 to 1991.)

I attended CBC back in Summer 2003 where I was a counselor seconded in from the UK. I'm actually from the Isle of Man which is just off the UK. It was one of the best Summers ever and my first trip to the US which I'll never forget. I've hoped ever since to get back to camp but will have to do it soon because I turn 25 next year. Who is Director there now? Gaylen and Brooke were in charge during my time there. I miss the place so much

I was a camper from 1988 until 1993 or 94....great memories! I went every year to session 3 which was the last week in July into August. I have recently reconnected with the group of girls that i went to camp with every year and it's like we were never apart. I am going to Alumni day at CBC on August 3rd. I remember a Fred but it was soooo long ago!
